Generic Solutions - Ecodomes

Ecoshelter is also raising funds to develop, stockpile and deploy a range of generic, sustainable shelter solutions such as the UN-approved CalEarth Emergency Shelters and Community Rumi Domes from award-winning architect, Nader Khalili.

A long roll of recycled plastic sandbag is filled with earth from the place where the shelter is being constructed. Even the plastic can be regionally-manufactured, meaning there are virtually no “House Miles” involved.

These structures are inherently strong and versatile. They are insulated against both cold and heat, with built-in ventilation for internal climate-control.

This design was created in response to a NASA brief on "How do we build on the moon".

It has won the Aga Khan Award for Sustainable Architecture, is highly rated by Architecture for Humanity, is recommended by Architects for Aid and many other NGO's involved in post disaster reconstruction.
